Education
Philosophy
Education
Philosophy and Teaching Reflective Statement (Update November
2024)
Education is critical in our complex world where people are
beginning to extend their cognitive abilities by working with
devices that incorporate artificial intelligence to enhance their
efficiency. Educating people so they understand our interconnected
world and enabling them to contribute is very rewarding to me.
Frequently, classes start with
In-the-news items that discusses how class tropic
related to published news items. Universities provide a critical
role in the educational process by increasing student's
understanding while teaching how to critically analyze and
synthesize knowledge. I believe the ability to solve problems and
synthesize diverse knowledge is the real value of an educated
person. Broadening students knowledge and teaching the ability to
apply the knowledge that student have to novel problems is my
educational goal. To obtain this goal, I believe course design that
include specific objectives is critical. These objectives denote the
knowledge and abilities students have at the completion of the
course. Courses should utilize material best suited to achieve the
objectives that have been set. Class room lectures demonstrations
and home work problems give students practice on mastering the
objectives. Student evaluations should be based on sampling
individual students ability to have mastered the objectives. Testing
student masterly is best done with questions that test student
understanding and provide quick feed back. New technology, such as
email, web pages and the Internet, should be used to enhance the
learning process.
While students typically have the necessary ability to succeed, many
lack the motivation to put in the necessary effort and time. To
motivate students, I explain how class topic's are important in
their daily lives and the world around them. Current news topics
which are course related are discussed briefly at the start of
classes. To facilitate students putting in the necessary effort, I
have expanded class time devoted to quizzes and exams. Additionally,
I've been doing out of class help session right before Exams.
Challenging oneself to answer questions is part of the necessary
effort required to learn new abilities. Many students seem to not
realize that testing is a very effective learning method and don't
spend much time testing their ability to understand the material. To
help students to study more effectively, I have in class, low grade
impact quizzes and more exams.
Education Tools
The Univeristy of North Dakota uses the Blackboard
Couse Learning Management system. Blackboard is used for all
grading activities and any student restricted material. The
Respondus exam authoring tool is used to create online
quizzes and exams. Class websites are used to host
class materials such as ppresentation slides and zoom
recordings. The class websites do not have to be deleted so
studens have access to the materials for longer periods of
time.
